Super weather, record entries at RRS Rose Festival 2015
Our first show at St Fagans can be regarded as a huge success. We knew that the season was a good one, but we were taken by surprise at the excellence of the roses.
All the tables were full and we really could have done with another row. Roses that stood out was the light yellow HT "The Wainwright Rose" Neil Duncan produced lots of them, all good. The pink HT "Andrea Stelzer" was in abundance, again lots shown by Neil Duncan from Andover in Hampshire who had a great show with floribundas, miniatures, and minifloras. Sheila Christie from Watford won the best exhibit in the floral art section with depiction of "Romance" with red roses. Pauline Martin of Felixstowe Suffolk staged a superb huge winning bowl of mixed roses with great colours. Ivor Mace, Treorchy, wasn't going to be outdone and produced fine exhibits of minifloras and miniatures. Ivor's best varieties were Unbridled, Whirlaway, and Tammy Clemons in the minifloras, and superb Joy in the miniatures.
Looking at the box of 6 miniatures all the top exhibitors failed to grab the first prize which was won by emerging exhibitor David Jay from Ton-Pentre Rhondda with a super box of Joy, David also won with a lovely vase of Yorkshire Lady and will be difficult to beat in future shows. Champion Rose of Wales was won by Mike Thompson of LLwynypia with a bloom of Big Chief not seen often these days, but this one lived up to it's name. Mike also won the runner up with a big Admiral Rodney.
